Franklin Templeton
Investments interview experience:
Hi, I am M. Kalyan, a 2014
passout (ECE) student from VNR
VIGNANA JYOTHI INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, Hyderabad.
Franklin Templeton visited our campus on 28th January, 2014. Only
CSE/IT/ECE/EEE branches were eligible. Package offered was 3.77 LPA. The recruitment
process is somewhat different from other IT companies as it’s a mutual fund and
investment management firm. Yet they hire B. Tech graduates as they have
in-house customised software product development and maintenance department.
During PPT, one of them asked the question, Have you watched the movie “The
Wolf of Wall Street” and said that they do exactly the same business but in the
movie the Hero does it illegally whereas they do it in a legal way.
Written test:
It was a paper based test. I don’t
remember the exact pattern of the question paper as I am writing this review
after a long time. As far as I remember, the paper contained the sections of
Quantitative aptitude, English comprehension, Logical reasoning and some very
basic questions from C language.
And there was one theory
question. It was:
Write an algorithm to determine
the angle between minute and hour hand of a clock at any given point of time.
(It means the input is time and
output should be the angle between minute and hour hand of the clock.)
And at the end there was an essay
writing question. It was something like this:
You have just joined the firm and
you have a problem with your superior. You are supposed to learn work from him
but he is very arrogant and not showing any interest in you. He is also getting
lot of his simple works done from you but not teaching you anything. How do you
approach to solve if such a situation arises?
After written test around 70
people were shortlisted from around 250 people. There was a HR interview after
this.
HR Interview:
Interview was hardly 10 minutes
for everyone. The questions he asked me were:
1. Tell
me about yourself?
2. Already
have an offer? (I had 2 offers in hand already. Told I had offer from NTT Data.)
3. NTT
Data is a very good IT company. Why do you wish to join Franklin Templeton
(Manipulated and told the same points that he
told during PPT for the question Why we should join Franklin Templeton
Investments)
4. Are
you Malayali?(mother tongue Malayalam?)
[I said no, my mother tongue is Telugu (he was a
malayali and his name is Kalyan, same as mine)]
5. Your
accent is like malayali. Ok then, You have any questions?
(I asked a couple of
questions
Sir you take
people’s money and give them profit. What exactly you do with the money?
He said they invest
t money in stocks and shares blah blah...
Sir when you
are investing in stocks and shares there is no guarantee that you get a profit,
you might also get loss, then how do you manage to pay the investors then?
He said “that
is where the stability of the company lies, we always have back up plans
blah..blah....”)
6. Anymore
questions? (I said no)
7. Ok
kalyan it’s a pleasure meeting you (He extended his hand saying that and we
exchanged a firm handshake) I thanked him for his tme and left the room.
I was doubtful
of my selection because he spoke very fast and was not audible, every time I
asked him to repeat the question indirectly saying “Sorry sir”. We were said that we will be informed about
the further rounds in a couple of days. They were only checking the communication
and confidence. Out of around 70 people, 53 people were shortlisted for further
rounds and I was one among them. We had further rounds at the Franklin
Templeton office at Nanakramguda, Hyderabad on February 1st, 2014. The
campus was beautiful.
After entering
into the office we were given a file with forms in it. We had to fill in the
personal details.
There were two
rounds, first was a Power Point Presentation round and then there was an
interview again.
Power Point Presentation round (PPT):
We were given 3 topics:
1.
Impact of technology on learning.
2.
Advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy.
3.
Recycling: It saves the world
We were told that we will be
given 10 minutes to prepare a presentation on any of the above topic and then we
have to present it. We were told that the way we present the topic was more
important than the topic we have chosen or the content. Immediately we were
rushed to computer rooms. All the computers had internet connection. Microsoft
Power Point and Internet explorer were kept open already. All we need to do is
browse and make a presentation. We were asked to save the presentation on
desktop with name and roll number. I made a mistake. I have wasted some time in
those 10 minutes as I was very confused over the selection of the topic,
finally chose the first one and made a presentation. Time was not enough I
hurried through it and did not even keep any design to the slides, it was pure
black and white. Later we had to present it before 5 HR’s in a room. We were
called one by one. I was not at all confident of presenting the topic well as I
did not prepare well. As expected I lost it in the PPT round. Around half of
the members were rejected after PPT round. I can say that you need to choose
the topic over which you have a good idea compared to other topics. The HR’s in
the room sat at five different places. Make sure maintain eye contact with all
of them and you are audible to the last person. Present it confidently.
Business Interview:
From my friends experience, it
was more like a behavioural interview. There were 2 HR’s and interview was a
bit long compared to the interview in the college(Around 30-40 minutes). Mostly
they did not ask any technical questions. Questions were about the goals,
strengths, weakness, Franklin Templeton and some logical reasoning questions,
about the other offer(If you have one!). May be they were checking the cultural
fitment of the candidate in the organisation.
Finally, 6 people were selected.
They have joined the company on June 16th, 2014. A couple of people
from 6 did not join the company and they called the other non selected people
who came up to the last round. They did the same thing with our seniors also. So
if you went up to the last round, performed good and still not selected, you
might have a chance of being called.
